How To Keep Your Car Safe From Thieves
A car is a valuable thing, it is also vulnerable. Being parked on the streets, or even in our own driveways, thieves have found ways to gain access to the contents of our vehicles, even being able to drive away with the entire car.
Our cars are valuable to us in many ways and it can be upsetting and stressful times if a car is broken into or stolen.
So, what can we do to keep our vehicles safe from thieves?
Park in Well-Lit Areas
Try and avoid leaving your car parked in dark areas with little or no CCTV. Streetlamps provide enough light to deter a lot of would-be thieves from attempting to steal from your vehicle as it is visible to all passers-by. Thieves are opportunistic, so if your car is in clear view they will move on to find an easier target.
Always Double Check That You’ve Locked Your Car
It is common for people to walk away from their cars thinking that they have locked it only to realise later that they haven’t.
National statistics show that there has been a 30% increase in thefts occurring by entering a car through an unlocked door since 2006. Don’t give thieves an easy ride – double check every time.
Keep Valuables Out Of Sight
Leaving handbags, tablets, phones, money or any other valuables on show is advertising to thieves the goods on offer. For extra security it is advised that you hide any belongings inside the car to remove temptation away from thieves who will think of it as an open invitation.
These ‘Smash and Grab’ crimes can occur even when your car is at a standstill when you are in traffic. Having valuables on your passenger seats makes it easy for passers-by to reach in, grab them and run off before you have a chance to follow. Always lock your doors from the inside when you are driving through built up areas.
